It’s estimated that nearly 1 in 7 people suffer from a metal allergy. Some are born with it, while others develop it later in life. Metal allergies typically don’t post any major threat to one’s health, but they can lead to some rather unpleasant side effects. If you suffer from a metal allergy, you need to take extra precautions when choosing jewelry to prevent an outbreak. To learn more about metal allergies, keep reading.

What Causes a Metal Allergy?

Metal allergies are the direct result of the body’s response to what it believes is a foreign invader. When a person suffering from a metal allergy wears a non-hypoallergenic ring or necklace, their immune system notices the metal and triggers an outbreak in response.

The medical term used to describe allergic reactions of the skin is allergic contact dermatitis. Reactions usually occur within the first couple of hours, and can range from minor to severe.

Symptoms of a Metal Allergy:

  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Inflammation
  • Pimple-like patches
  • Blistering

Note: Symptoms vary from person to person

Gold is not the best choice of metal…

It’s a common belief that authentic gold jewelry is a good choice of metal for individuals suffering from a metal allergy. Gold, by itself, is considered a hypoallergenic metal, meaning there’s a low chance of it creating an allergic reaction. However, it’s rare to find jewelry made of 100% gold.

Avoid Nickel!

The absolute worst metal in terms of allergic reactions is nickel. This water-soluble alloy metal is commonly found in white gold and even sterling silver jewelry. When your body releases sweat, it literally melts some of the nickel into a salt-like compound, which essentially triggers an allergic reaction.

If your mind is set on purchasing white gold jewelry, check to make sure it doesn’t contain any nickel alloys beforehand.

Tungsten Carbide

A better choice of jewelry for individuals with a metal allergy is tungsten carbide. It’s one of the few hypoallergenic metals used in jewelry, and unlike gold, tungsten carbide in incredibly strong and able to withstand just about anything you have to throw its way.
