Many couples choose to start shopping for anniversary bands at milestones in their marriage — a year, five years, ten years, and so on! Oftentimes, anniversary bands are embellished with diamonds… but there are no set rules. The main thing is that you’re happy with it and it is something you’ll find yourself wearing often. It is meant to celebrate a milestone in your marriage!
So, where do you even get started?
Anniversary Bands: Year-by-Year
There’s an old-fashioned list about gifts to get your spouse for each anniversary: paper, cotton, leather, etc. The list urges you to wait until you’re married for fifty years to celebrate with gold jewelry, and ten years before giving gold jewelry! We say: why not do it when you feel like doing it? Why should there be a specific time to give your loved one an anniversary band? Straying from tradition can be such an amazing surprise for your spouse.
However, we know that guidelines can be helpful when you don’t know what exactly to get.
Year One: Gold
Gold is perfect for the first year of marriage, because it’s a year full of so many “firsts” together as a couple, and a year of memories.
Choose a piece of jewelry in yellow or white gold — rose gold is even a great option!
Year 5: Sapphire
Sapphire is historically associated with truth and loyalty, making it the traditional gemstone for fifth year wedding anniversaries. Sapphire can suit so many styles, because it’s generally available in many cuts and hues.
Year 10: Diamonds
Being married for ten years is a great milestone to be celebrated, so it’s only natural for diamonds to be the perfect gift for a ten year marriage. Diamonds are a part of every sought-after jewelry piece
A diamond ring is both sentimental and gorgeous, and is something that will be cherished for many years to come!
Choosing Your Perfect Anniversary Ring
The first thing you need to decide is whether or not you want the ring to have a similar style to your wedding and/or engagement rings. The advantage to this, of course, would be that you can wear all of the rings together on the same finger.
However, if you have a simple wedding band, it can be nice to get an anniversary band that has more embellishment or color.
However, if your wedding band already has precious gems, you might want to get an anniversary band that has a similar gem with a different style — like something with your children’s birthstones. If you do opt to take this route, we recommend wearing them on different fingers for a complementary look.
How to Wear an Anniversary Band
A huge question you probably have is which finger you should wear your anniversary band. Honestly? There’s really no strict rule on this. It’s really up to personal preference! Some like to wear the anniversary band with their engagement and wedding band, and some choose to wear them on a different finger or different hand.
You could even completely switch out your wedding band for your anniversary band. A lot of people choose to do this when upgrading to a better ring, and there’s nothing wrong with that! Again, it really is up to personal preference.
