How many photos of married or engaged couples have you seen on Instagram this week? Probably more than a few. With over 2 million weddings each year in the U.S. since 2000 and over 600 million active Instagram users, you’re bound to come across your fair share of wedding day selfies and snapshots on the popular photo-sharing app.
When it comes to one of the most important days in any couple’s life, what are the most popular themes, locations, and exotic wedding destinations? We analyzed nearly 900,000 Instagram posts with the hashtag #WeddingDay to find out. Keep reading to see what we found.
One thing is true, and that’s how popular New York is on Instagrammers’ wedding day. The Empire State had nearly 31 mentions of #WeddingDay on Instagram per 100,000 residents. There’s just something about New York that makes everything much more magical (it might have something to do with its iconic buildings and Central Park). The second most popular state for a wedding, according to Instagram, is Maine (nearly 30 mentions). It’s an ideal location for a rustic wedding, which has been a top wedding trend as of late. Not only is the scenery beautiful, but also the overall wedding bill is a lot nicer on the eyes compared to New York.
The top city to tie the knot, of course, is New York City. However, three of the top #WeddingDay cities on the list are in California. It may be that California has something for everyone. Los Angeles and San Diego have the warm sun and a city life that gives Manhattan a run for its money. Then you have San Francisco – one of the most unique cities in the U.S. The Golden Gate Bridge offers the perfect backdrop for wedding day and engagement photos.
Traveling to an exotic country with close friends and family to get married is quite common among couples, according to The Knot. Destination weddings tend to be less stressful and usually require little planning (thank goodness for wedding coordinators), but they can also be cost effective. Why spend $30,000 or more for a wedding in the U.S. when you can spend a few thousand dollars for a destination wedding at an all-inclusive resort?
The top “I Do” destination – with the most mentions of #WeddingDay on Instagram – is Italy (roughly 62 mentions per 100,000 residents). Romance is nothing new in Italy and dates all the way back to the Renaissance. Italy’s historic buildings also serve as a beautiful backdrop for vows.
The second most popular country for a destination wedding is Montenegro (around 61 #WeddingDay mentions). After that, there’s Cyprus, Australia, and Croatia. One thing these countries all have in common is the ability to offer a beach wedding. If you’re going to go somewhere exotic, you might as well pick a place where you can stick your toes in the sand, right?
To get a more detailed look at #WeddingDay on Instagram, we decided to look at the words mentioned in the captions of the posts. Among these captions, summer was the most frequently mentioned season. In fact, 55 percent of all #WeddingDay seasons mentioned specified the summer. Summer could be a popular time to get hitched because of the beach (which appeared in 32 percent of location mentions).
Vintage (37 percent), rustic (22 percent), and traditional (18 percent) themes also appeared the most often in #WeddingDay Instagram posts.
Social media truly lets us share every moment of our lives with others. Considering your wedding may be the most important day of your life, of course, you’re going to share it on Instagram.
We examined the most common words and phrases mentioned in #WeddingDay posts. We found these to include “Big Day,” “Beautiful Wedding,” “Special Day,” and “Beautiful Bride” (we’re imagining friends and family sharing pictures of the bride’s glowing smile).
Memorable receptions also seem to be key in gauging the success of a wedding – “Late Night,” “Dance Floor,” and “Great Time” were also mentioned alongside the hashtag #WeddingDay. Perhaps dancing the night away is just as important as tying the knot. As they say, “Pictures or it didn’t happen!”
Based on the #WeddingDay Instagram posts analyzed, we can conclude people adore beach weddings. They also really like to get married in a city. Destination weddings are still a thing, and Italy seems to be the go-to destination to get hitched.
